Heard good things about Wineport Lodge and was very excited to check it out. Graduating from NUIG, we booked a table here to celebrate. The hotel is situated on a beautiful scenic location beside Lough Erne, perfect for a romantic getaway. Greeted with a warm reception we were offered to have a drink at the bar before dining as we arrived early. The bar is small and cosy with a fantastic view looking onto the lake. After a round of Guinness we went to the restaurant.
Greeted at the door by the Norma the GM we were shown to our table. The restaurants décor and design is chic and again has a fantastic view looking onto the lake. Waiting staff attentive and atmosphere was vibrant due to 2 large dinner parties. To accompany our meal we ordered a delicious bottle of Sauvignon Blanc “Hunky Dory” from Marlborough, New Zealand. A very fruity and crisp wine that is easily drinkable on its own.
An Amuse Bouche of Carrot, Coriander & Ginger Soup started off the evening
This was followed by our starters of: Steamed kilmore quay mussels, white wine, cream, shallots & pesto, toasted ciabatta Potted local wild rabbit & sweet onion rillette, piccalilli, toasted country loaf Crispy pork trotters & panfried black pudding, apple, mustard & onion gravy
For mains: Herb crusted rump of Irish lamb, creamed rosemary onions, minted glazed carrots & pearl barley Seafood mixed grill hot & cold Selection anchovy caper butter dill mayonnaise Horan’s slow roast pork belly, honey mustard parsnip purée, buttered cabbage & black pudding We ordered extra side dishes of Cauliflower in a creamy blue cheese sauce & Tempura onion rings (but received Green Beans, Thyme & Caramelised Onions)
To finish I ordered the Selection of homemade sorbets (Mango, Strawberry & Coconut). I quite fancied something sweet but was completely stuffed so this done the job.
A round of complementary champagne for the table from Norma to congratulate me for my recent success. A nice gesture and a great way to end the evening. Few silly mistakes like the Green Beans instead of Onion Rings but nothing worth complaining about as the restaurant was busy this evening. To be honest the food was only ok. For the price we paid I’d expect much more. I had built Wineport Lodge up in my mind so much to be left disappointed. However a big thank you to the restaurant team that provided us excellent service, it really made the evening.
